    I created this animation in 1996.

     

    These animations support the teaching of concepts in chemistry in freshman through graduate level courses. Some of the QuickTime movie are without audio, and some of the audio--from a few of the sound augmented QuickTime movie--has been stripped and made available in Real Audio's streaming audio format. The chemistry courses that profit from these sorts of multimedia content include instrumental analysis, environmental chemistry, atmospheric chemistry and air quality. The gold foil experiment movie augments a completely on-line freshman chemistry course.

    QuickTime Movies

    All of the QuickTime movies above have been "flattened" using Robert Hennessy's flattenMooV or QuickTime Pro to allow them to be played on non-Mac systems; however, QuickTime is required. QuickTime software for Mac and Windows is available at this Apple site. QuickTime for either the Macintosh or Windows is free!

    Shockwave Flash Animations

    A few of these animation are available as Shockwave flash files. With the appropriate plugin these will play directly in your browser. Files noted with a * have been converted from GIF animation format and do not really take advantage of the Flash vector format advantage and are therefore unfortunately oversized. Technology marches on.

    GIF89 Animations

    For those of you who don't have QuickTime capabilities Why?, above is a selection of ALL of the QuickTime movies at this site reconfigured as animated GIFs. All you need to do is choose the link for the movie you want and click on it. The next page that appears will automatically display the movie as a series of GIFs. Unfortunately the sounds for each movie can not be included in this format. Many of the GIF animations include some running text in the movie to try to make up for the missing narrations. These texts have mostly been removed from the QuickTime movies.

    Streaming Audio

    The narrations of most of the QuickTime movies have been separated from the video and encoded in RealAudio format. With the RealAudio Player or Real Audio plug-in www.real.com these files will play by merely clicking on the desired link above.
